October's Origin Explained

On the Gregorian calendar, October is the 10th month consisting of 31 days. Like the preceding three months, October gets its name from the Latin word “octo” meaning “eight”, since it was originally the 8th month on the ancient 10-month Roman calendar. Around 713 BCE, January and February were added to the calendar, making January 1 the start of the new year and shifting October to the 10th month position.

World Teacher's Day - October 5

World Teacher’s Day celebrates and honors the teaching profession worldwide. Since 1994, October 5th has been recognized annually as Teachers’ Day in many countries, based on a recommendation from UNESCO. The date marks the anniversary of the 1996 UNESCO-ILO conference held in Paris, where the Recommendation on the Status of Teachers was unanimously adopted. While some nations observe Teachers’ Day on varying dates significant to their culture and history, October 5th provides a unified international observance. On this day, events and tributes are held to recognize teachers and their contributions to society and the future generation.

Columbus Day - Second Monday of October

October 12, 1492 holds major historical significance in the Western world. On this date, explorer Christopher Columbus completed his journey across the Atlantic Ocean, landing in the “New World.” The US Congress designated the second Monday of October as Columbus Day in 1971.

The island Columbus first stepped foot on October 12th is modern day San Salvador in the Bahamas. Believing he had discovered a new route to India, Columbus referred to the native peoples as “Indians.” This marked the start of European exploration and colonization of the Americas. Though Columbus did not actually land in North America, his historic 1492 voyage opened the door to transatlantic travel and trade. Columbus Day recognizes his role in connecting Europe with the Americas.

Halloween - October 31st

Halloween is a popular secular holiday celebrated annually on October 31st, with origins tracing back to ancient Celtic pagan and Christian traditions. Today, children dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating for candy, while adults may attend costume parties, carve jack-o-lanterns, watch horror movies, or visit haunted attractions.

The name Halloween derives from “All Hallows’ Eve”, the day before All Saints’ Day. Historically, Halloween had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated by the Celts in what is now the United Kingdom. Samhain, marking the transition from summer to winter, was considered a liminal time when the boundary between the spirit world and our world was most porous.

On Samhain, the Celts believed the souls of the dead would visit their old homes, and bonfires were lit to guide them while warding off evil spirits. Masks and costumes were worn to blend in with the returning souls. When the Romans conquered Celtic territory, they combined Samhain with Feralia, their festival honoring the dead, and Pomona, their harvest festival. In the 7th century, the Catholic Church moved All Saints’ Day from May 13th to November 1st, likely to supplant the pagan celebration of Samhain. October 31st thus became known as All Hallows’ Eve, evolving into today’s Halloween festivities.
